PhD Studentship on nanomaterials:
Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment (SMAT) is a new surface treatment developed in our lab to enhance the mechanical properties of metallic alloys. This process involves the formation of a nanocrystalline layer ascribable to a grain refinement mechanism induced by repeated impact loadings supported by the surface. The resultant system has a layered structure, composed of nanometric grains (less than 100 nm) at the top surface and a strain hardened transition layer in the subsurface. This nanocrystallised microstructure was observed in different metallic materials like iron, copper, titanium alloy or stainless steel.
Tensile and fatigue tests performed at room temperature showed that this superficial nanostructure coupled to the transition layer induces very attractive mechanical properties. The tribological properties are also affected by SMAT as the surface hardness is increased and a high compressive residual stress state is created.
The goals of this PhD work will be to characterize, to better understand and to model the SMAT process. The aim is to enhance the mechanical properties (fatigue, thermal fatigue) as well as the surface properties (wear, corrosion behavior) of industrial parts using SMAT.
The appointee will have the opportunity to use a wide variety of techniques to characterise the nanocrystallised materials: Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy, nanoindentation tests, X-ray diffraction technique… This work will be carried out together with a big French automotive company.
Requirement: Candidates must have Master degree in Mechanics and/or in Materials Science
