Default PhD Position in Chemical Physics / Physical Chemistry, EPFL, Switzerland

We currently have an open PhD position for the project “Dynamics in Helium Nanodroplets”

This project investigates the electronic excitation and photoionization of species dissolved in superfluid helium nanodroplets in order to gain a more profound understanding of the mechanisms governing the dynamics in this finite size quantum liquid. In addition, we plan to make use of the special characteristics of the helium solvent to study fundamental properties of embedded systems, for example electron transfer, or to probe the potential energy surfaces of large molecular systems. To achieve these goals experiments in both the time and frequency domain are performed using nanosecond and femtosecond laser systems in combination with state-of-the-art ion- and electron-imaging techniques. In addition, experiments are planned at the XUV free electron laser in Trieste (Italy) that is current being constructed and is expected to become operational in 2009. More detailed information on the project can be found HERE.

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person with a masters degree iin physics or physical chemistry to work on this project. The successful candidate is expected to make active contributions to the research that is being carried out in a small team. Experience with lasers systems, vacuum equipment or imaging techniques is desirable but not required. The position will be for a maximum period of 4 years, with a starting salary of CHF 50'000 per annum.

Interested candidates can apply by sending their CV, grade transcripts, and contact information of 3 references to Dr. Marcel Drabbels at Marcel.Drabbels@epfl.ch

Ph.D. position

A doctoral position is available starting in January 2008 in the Surface Dynamics group (Prof. R. Beck) of the Laboratory of Molecular Physical Chemistry (LCPM). Our research uses state-of-the art laser techniques to probe reactive processes at the gas-surface interface through quantum-state-resolved measurements. We are exploring technologically relevant surface reactions such methane chemisorption used for hydrogen production or the reaction of silane on a silicon surface used for molecular beam epitaxy of semiconductor films. A new project, which will investigate the adsorption and reactions of vibrationally excited water on solid surfaces, is planned for 2008. For further details see: http://isic2.epfl.ch/page63433-en.html

We are looking for highly motivated and experimentally talented physicists or physical chemists possibly with experience in laser spectroscopy, surface science, and/or computer interfacing of experiments. Starting salary is 50,000.- SFr in the first year. Doctoral positions are limited to 4 years. Interested candidates should send a CV, grade transcripts, two letters of recommendation or names and contact information of two references and a copy of their diploma/masters thesis to: Rainer.Beck@epfl.ch

Default Postdoc Position in Organometallic Chemistry at EPFL, Switzerland, 51,000 Euro/year

The Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Catalysis in the Institute of Chemical Sciences
and Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne anticipates an opening for a
postdoc position in organometallic chemistry. We are a young and dynamic group working in the interface of chemistry and energy. Our main research goal is to develop well-defined molecular compounds, mostly transition metal complexes, for catalytic and electrocatalytic transformations that are related to energy storage and conversion. Towards this goal, we currently focus on the activation of small molecules such as CO , H2, O2, H2O, and alkanes, as well as the development of new sustainable catalytic systems for organic synthesis. Within this framework, the successful candidate for this position will focus on the activation of hydrogen by first row transition metals.

EPFL is one of the two Swiss federal institutes of technology. It has three missions: education, research, and technology transfer at the highest international level. More information about EPFL and the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering can be found at: http://www.epfl.ch/ and http://isic.epfl.ch/index.html.

Salary: The annual salary is roughly 80,000 CHF (ca. 80,000 USD or 51,000 Euro).

Requirements: A Ph.D. in inorganic, organic, or organometallic chemistry and a proficiency in English are required. Training in synthetic and mechanistic organometallic chemistry, and knowledge and experience with inert-atmosphere manipulation techniques are desirable. We are particularly interested in a highly motivated chemist who is independent, persistent, and career-oriented. The appointment will be for one year initially and may be renewed afterwards upon mutual agreements.

Interested candidates should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, names and contacts of three references, and a statement of motivation and career objective. Due to a large volume of applications, we will only reply to those who will be further considered. If you do not hear from me within 2 week of initial application, please assume that you application is declined.

The project receives funding from the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO/ACTS).

Job description

Hydrogen storage is a major bottleneck in the development of a future energy economy based on hydrogen as an energy carrier. Key to competitive hydrogen storage is the development of lightweight, cheap and safe materials that can be reversibly loaded under temperature and pressure conditions suitable for applications. Surface adsorption of hydrogen in porous, crystalline materials such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide materials with record specific surface areas per gram material, and are therefore proposed as potential hydrogen storage materials. Our research focuses on the design of new materials using first principles modelling, chemical synthesis and the fundamental characterisation of the hydrogen sorption.

Characterisation of the adsorption using macroscopic methods as well as in situ neutron diffraction will be performed to determine which are the most favourable positions of hydrogen in the crystals with the optimum adsorption interaction strength. With this knowledge new materials will be designed, aiming at improved characteristics and higher capacity. For this research we have openings for two highly motivated PhD students who will work on the project in close collaboration; one with a synthetic chemistry background and one with a physics background.

For more information, please visit: http://www.rrr.tudelft.nl/fame.
